The Medical Council has launched a consultation in respect of proposed amendments to the rules governing the education and training of doctors, made pursuant to Part 10 of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007 (the “Act”).

An important function of the Medical Council is to promote continuous improvement in medical education and training. In this regard, the Medical Council helps to ensure that trainee doctors receive education and training to a standard at which they can provide care which is safe and clinically sound both on qualification and, thereafter, throughout their medical careers.

The Medical Council is currently proposing to amend the existing rules made under Part 10 of the Act. The proposed amendments are designed to better reflect the current arrangements for basic medical training in Ireland, to include the adoption of the World Federation in Medical Education Standards, 2015.

The Medical Council is inviting interested parties to submit views on the draft amendments to the rules, following which the amendments will be revised and finalised.

Further information on the consultation process can be accessed here.
