The Low Pay Commission was established last year to examine and make recommendations regarding the appropriate level of the national minimum wage in Ireland.  The minimum wage was last increased in 2011 by €1 to €8.65, following a cut of a similar amount earlier in 2011.  In its first report last year, the Low Pay Commission recommended an increase in the minimum wage from €8.65 per hour to €9.15 per hour. This recommendation was accepted by government and the National Minimum Wage Order 2015 came into operation last Friday, 1 January.  Reports suggest that approximately 124,000 workers will benefit from this increase.  Going forward, the Low Pay Commission will conduct an annual review of the minimum wage in Ireland.
