Following on from an announcement made in June 2015 (click here for details), the Ombudsman now has the power to consider complaints relating to incidents which occur on or after 24 August 2015 at private nursing homes that benefit from the Nursing Home Support Scheme. In a press release dated 14 September 2015, the Ombudsman, Peter Tyndall, remarked: "The extension of my remit will ensure that some of the most vulnerable people in our communities can have their complaints examined independently". This step means that residents of such private nursing homes now have the same right to complain to the Ombudsman as had already been available to residents of HSE-run nursing homes, addressing a gap that had been previously highlighted by the Ombudsman.
