The Policing Authority publishes its first annual report

The annual report of the Policing Authority (the “Authority) outlines the objectives and achievements of the Authority’s first year of operations, following its establishment on 1 January 2016. Among other things, the report highlights the following:
  • 15 staff members were recruited to the Authority by the end of 2016;
  • 13 meetings were held by the Authority in 2016;
  • The Authority met with the Garda Commissioner in private in January 2016 and in public in April 2016 (see our previous blog in relation to this meeting);
  • 4 committees were established by the Authority and 32 committee meetings were held;
  • 4 public consultations were held;
  • A review of the Garda Síochána Protected Disclosure procedures were submitted to the Tánaiste in November 2016;
  • A Code of Ethics was successfully established in December 2016 (see our previous blog in relation to the Code of Ethics).

Commission on the Future Policing in Ireland In another policing-related development, the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald recently announced the final terms of reference and the membership of the Commission on the Future Policing in Ireland. The stated aim of the Commission is to carry out a fundamental review of the role, structure, leadership, management, ethos and culture of policing in Ireland and the existing oversight arrangements. The Commission is required to bring forward proposals and recommendations and submit a final report in September 2018.
