The Press Council of Ireland was established on 1st January 2008, with the following objectives:

  1. To provide the public with an independent forum for resolving complaints about the press.
  2. To resolve all complaints quickly, fairly and free of charge.
  3. To defend the freedom of the press and the freedom of the public to be informed.

In recent press releases, the Press Council has sought applications for independent members (those outside the press industry) to be appointed to the Press Council and also for the position of Chairman.
