Richard, a paediatric doctor at The Evelina Children's Hospital in London, was cycling to work when he was hit by a car and knocked from his bicycle.
Richard was taken by ambulance to St Thomas' Hospital in London. He was diagnosed as suffering from a depressed fracture of the left tibia and the lateral tibial plateau.
Richard required a lengthy operation in which a metal plate and 8 metal screws were inserted into his left knee, and shards of bone, putty and glue were used to build up the hole in his tibia.
Richard remained an in-patient for 3 days before being discharged in a wheelchair.
Over the following months Richard required extensive care and support, before being able to return to full time work in June 2011.
