In one of his first jobs Mr W, who later became a successful architect and was awarded an OBE for his voluntary work and services for access to buildings for disabled people, worked for the Ministry of Housing on the “5M housing system” in Sheffield, Leeds and Catterick. Mr W was able to provide extensive details of the system from the Royal Institute of British Architects.
These showed asbestos was extensively used in the fascias, cladding, insulation and party walls. Mr W breathed in asbestos during site visits. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2008. Peter Williams conducted his action against the Government which was settled for £250,000 without the necessity of court action.
The photo shows one of the housing projects in Sheffield (where asbestos was extensively used) which Mr W worked on.
Peter Williams who was instructed in this instance says:
“Even in the late 1960s the Government was ignoring its own advice about the risk of mesothelioma from asbestos exposure. The consequences of those decisions are still being felt today by those who worked in ignorance of the dangers”.
