Mr Tilbury was attending a classroom lecture given by firearms instructor PC David Micklethwaite, who was demonstrating a .44 Magnum Revolver as part of a talk on the weapons police officers can come up against. The gun was pointed at Mr Tilbury and fired. PC Micklethwaite had not appreciated that he had loaded the weapon with live ammunition.
The bullet hit Mr Tilbury in the abdomen, causing a smashed rib, massive bowel and muscle damage, lacerating his liver and tearing his right kidney. He underwent emergency life saving surgery and remained unconscious in intensive care, undergoing further operations over the following two weeks. He has since had to undergo further major surgery for complications consequent to the very serious injuries suffered. Mr Tilbury now suffers with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, has been declared unfit for work by TVP Doctors and has not been able to return to work up to this date.
Jill Greenfield, personal injury partner at Fieldfisher, was instructed by Mr Tilbury to represent him in his personal injury claim and has issued a High Court writ.
Jill Greenfield said:
“This was a shocking incident. My client was shot at point blank range whilst attending what should have been a routine demonstration. We expect to recover compensation for Keith to help him put his life back together.”
