Claire Glasgow has secured settlements for the family of a teenage cyclist killed when he was knocked off his bicycle by a drunk driver who was on the phone at the time.

The hit and run collision took place during the first period of Covid lockdown, when strict stay-at-home regulations were in place. Adam, 15, was riding his BMX bike along a quiet road in Derbyshire as his permitted daily exercise when he was hit by the car and sustained a fatal head injury. The driver left Adam at the scene without calling an ambulance.

His mother, father and brother rushed to the scene after they called Adam's phone and were told by a stranger that he had been in an accident. They found him lying on a grass verge on the side of the road with catastrophic injuries.

Each in turn tried to perform lifesaving CPR but sadly his head injuries were too severe, and he could not be resuscitated.

The driver, who had been drinking and was speaking on the phone without using a hands-free device, was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and sentenced to five years and 11 months in jail.

Adam's family are deeply traumatised by his death and what they experienced in the aftermath of the collision. The settlements secured by Claire will help to pay for the treatment they all need to process the trauma of losing their precious son and brother in such horrific circumstances.

Adam loved music, playing his guitar, laughter, cycling and being with other people and is described by his family as being a "beautiful, kind thoughtful, funny and talented young man."

In his memory they have set up a charitable foundation to help other families deal with grief. The Adam Lewis Barry Foundation aims to put "smiles back on faces" through its donations to the Treetops Bereavement Counselling Services and the Adam Lewis Barry Music Fund and other causes.

Thanking Claire and the team at Fieldfisher for their efforts in securing a settlement, the family said: 'Whilst no amount of money will ever bring Adam back, the outcome of the settlements will allow us to move forward, albeit slowly, with our lives without having the immediate financial pressures to endure as well as everything else.

'I cannot understate the importance of this outcome to us as we face the array of huge challenges in living the rest of our live without Adam. The support from Claire has been outstanding in guiding us through this hugely challenging and intrusive process. We cannot thank you enough.

'The very tragic circumstances makes this a highly emotive process - you and your team have been keenly attuned to this and have been very sensitive. This has made it far more tolerable for us that’s for sure.'
