Recent investigations have uncovered that hundreds of children apparently underwent unnecessary surgery recommended by Mr Yaser Jabber, some of which have led to preventable amputations.
Many of these surgeries provided no significant medical benefits to the patients. It also appears that families were not adequately informed about the associated risks.

Caron Heyes, Mark Bowman and Will Jones are instructed to investigate compensation claims against the Great Ormond Street Hospital lower limb reconstruction team, including orthopaedic surgeon Yaser Jabbar, whose practice is currently under review.
As our clients are all receiving ongoing treatment, their prognosis is unclear, but, like many others, some are being told the damage is significant and may result in amputation.
Some have had treatment that included a type of fixing screw during leg lengthening procedures, use of which in the UK was completely suspended for paediatric surgery in 2020 by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority. Some children have been left with worse problems than they started with.
Mr Jabbar was a consultant paediatric orthopaedic surgeon at GOSH from 2017 until October 2022 and was part of their lower limb reconstruction team. He also worked privately at the Portland Hospital in London. The care of 721 patients from GOSH is currently under review.
His work at St John and St Elizabeth Hospital, and Cromwell Hospital, (an HCA Healthcare UK hospital) both private, is now also being investigated, as well as at the NHS Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
A damning report into the whole department at the GSOH by the Royal College of Surgeons, due to be published, concludes children had 'incorrect' and 'unsuitable' orthopaedic surgery under Mr Jabbar's care at GOSH.
Read by our solicitors, the report reveals long standing concerns about the leadership and management of the orthopaedic team at GOSH and unsafe procedures and aftercare.
It also appears that the report will highlight failures by GOSH's leadership which ignored or downplayed concerns from staff, allowing Mr Jabbar’s harmful practices to continue for years, causing injury to many of his of young and vulnerable patients.
Potential reasons for a claim could include:
- Unnecessary surgery performed without clear medical justification, where the child did not benefit.
- Avoidable amputations that could have been prevented with appropriate or alternative treatment.
- Failure to obtain clear consent, where families were not adequately informed about the risks of surgery or did not give informed consent.
- Failure to warn families of possible complications or the long-term impact of surgery.
