The vulnerability of elderly patients is highlighted as the Royal Bournemouth Hospital is criticised by the Care Quality Commission for the standard of care provided to patients, particularly the elderly. The new Chief Inspector of Hospitals, Professor Sir Mike Richards, stated that “basic nursing care was not being given to patients in two medical care wards.”
Inadequate staffing levels were identified at the hospital despite management knowing that hospital beds were full. Staff had apparently raised concerns about the impact of high workloads on the standards of nursing care they could provide.
