In one of the first blogs we published in 2016, "Two weeks of paid paternity leave to be introduced", we informed you that the Government had approved proposals to introduce 2 weeks’ paternity leave with effect from September 2016. In our most recent blog on the topic, "General Election 2016 – Implications for Maternity / Paternity Leave Entitlements", we highlighted that there was a concern that the legislation would not be rolled out in time, given the political uncertainty caused by the election. However, the acting Tánaiste, Joan Burton, has recently obtained Cabinet approval to fast track the introduction of the legislation. A draft Family Leave Bill is currently being prepared in advance of a new government being formed. The legislation is anticipated to be implemented by September 2016. We will keep you updated on any further developments as they happen.
