The importance of note taking for all professionals involved in investigations is in the news as a result of a senior Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) investigator’s report and his proposal that the Ombudsman Commission writes to the Garda Síochána and makes observations regarding the standard of note keeping during investigations.
The issue of the standard of note taking required by investigators is equally valid for other regulators as a lack of adequate and accurate notes presents difficulties for investigations and future prosecutions.
The matter highlights the need for procedures for all involved in investigatory work to ensure that the quality of note taking is consistent and of a sufficient standard to meet the purpose for which the notes are required
