Following the suspension of orthopaedic surgeon Kuldeep Stohr, Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge has said that the clinical enquiry already in place will now look at the treatment of a further 800 patients, most of them children.
The review will investigate potentially substandard treatment of 700 patients with planned operations and another 100 adult and child who underwent surgery during emergency treatment. The hospital is a designated major trauma centre for the east of England.
The hospital has said it will contact patients and families and prioritise those who may need additional clinical assessment and treatment.
Cambridge University Hospitals, which runs Addenbrooke's, says it will publish findings from the external clinical reviews and from the initial external review, once they are concluded.
A separate investigation will be conducted into whether concerns about the surgeon should have been spotted sooner, not least since concerns were first raised in 2015, with a review carried out in 2016.
Originally, only nine cases were identified, with substandard care involving hip operations on children who have been left with lasting injuries and which "illustrated a number of problems with both judgement and technique".
It found some of the children's quality of life had been affected, including their mobility.
