September marks Childhood Cancer Awareness Month as designated by the specialist charity Children with Cancer UK.
Jamie Green's client Olivia Taylor, who went blind following a suspected late diagnosis of a brain tumour, has become the poster girl to support the Always by your Side campaign to inspire other children similarly diagnosed with life-changing cancer.
Olivia's claim is currently being investigated, with expert reports already obtained suggesting that earlier diagnosis could have prevented Olivia from losing her sight after her brain tumour and swelling in the brain (hydrocephalus) injured her optic nerve.
Now 9 years' old, Olivia initially presented to her GP at 13 months' old with her parents reporting episodes of unresponsiveness lasting about 20 seconds each. The GP referred her to a paediatrician who she saw a month later. Despite measuring her head circumference and noting that this was above the 99.6th centile for her age, the paediatrician did not refer her for an urgent scan and instead suggested a 'wait and watch' approach.
Olivia's tumour was only diagnosed three months later when her parents again raised concerns with the GP. By this time, Olivia was frequently falling and had developed a squint, where her eyes point in different directions. An urgent scan was performed three days later which showed the large tumour. Chemotherapy was started but no treatment was given to reduce the swelling which ultimately contributed to her losing vision a month or so later. Olivia continues to undergo chemotherapy to try and reduce the size of the tumour.
The Always by your Side campaign includes a series of short films to reassure children diagnosed with cancer what they might experience at hospital, including a bear named Cory being sold to raise funds for the charity.
Olivia appeared on ITV This Morning with her parents to advertise the bears and the charity, and to describe her experience of having tea with Queen Camilla in late 2023.

Meanwhile, Jamie continues to investigate a potential late diagnosis medical negligence claim on Olivia's behalf.
