NHS England will conduct a 'wider review' into orthopaedic and spinal operations performed by a now suspended surgeon at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge after at least nine children have been left with serious injuries.
Concerns about the surgeon, who has not been named, were raised by colleagues at the hospital last October. The Trust then commissioned its own review into the hip operations involving children who have been left with lasting injuries.
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said an independent expert found operations involving nine children fell "below expected standards" on several occasions over the past two and a half years.
Many, if not all, of the child patients involved have had to undergo further unnecessary surgeries and will suffer with life-long avoidable mobility issues.
The surgeon has now been suspended while NHS England will conduct a wider review.
There are potentially many more victims of poor treatment. Addenbrooke's Chief Executive Roland Sinker has apologised to some of the families involved.
