On 31 January 2014 the European Commission released a "Call for information on in-situ generated biocidal active substances". The information is designed to assist with the European Commission's decision-making process on how to manage in situ generated biocidal active substances in the context of the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR).

The call for information is addressed to companies marketing or using chemical substances, devices, equipment or systems for the disinfection of air, drinking water, waste water, bathing water or other water, swimming pools, aquariums, air conditioning systems, chemical toilets, walls or floors in private or public facilities such as hospitals, processing or cooling systems in industrial facilities, or water distribution systems.

This initiative is important considering the controversial status of in situ generated biocidal substances. There remain many uncertainties and differences of opinion between Member States and stakeholders on how in-situ products should be handled – for that reason, the latest July 2013 Guidance proposed by the European Commission has not been finalized or even discussed at the last Competent Authority (CA) meetings in December 2013.

Companies are invited to submit the necessary information to the Commission by 31 March 2014.
