On the 25th of July, the Prime Minister and Energy Secretary launched Great British Energy (GBE), a flagship initiative central to the UK's commitment to accelerating investment and delivery of clean, low-carbon energy projects. This strategic move aims to drive significant investment in new jobs, reduce the nation's reliance on fossil fuels, and foster a local partnership ethos in renewable energy development across the UK.

GBE's promising start with strategic partnerships

One of the first major partnerships under GBE has been announced with the Crown Estate, targeting the development of projects capable of generating up to 20-30GW of clean energy. While this is a promising start, GBE faces significant challenges in achieving its core objectives. Key hurdles include securing investment and confidence from developers, operators, and investors, as well as overcoming bottlenecks in the planning system and grid connection processes.

Navigating challenges in renewable energy development

Christopher Stanwell, Head of UK Planning at Fieldfisher, commented: The establishment of GBE is an exciting opportunity to deliver on the Government's Net Zero objectives. However, substantial reforms to the planning process are essential to fully leverage its benefits.

Cecily Davis, Construction and Projects Partner at Fieldfisher, added: "GBE's incorporation is a crucial milestone for the UK's Net Zero ambitions. Nevertheless, significant challenges persist, especially in enhancing grid connection capacity and accessibility."
