Professional background

I am a dispute resolution lawyer with over 25 years' experience specialising in problems involving aspects of banking and finance, insolvency and fraud and asset tracing.

I assist individuals, corporate entities, trustees/beneficiaries and insolvency practitioners to resolve a broad range of disputes.

The cases in which I am involved frequently involve multiple jurisdictions (offshore and onshore), but I am equally at home advising on domestic litigation.

I have extensive experience of various forms of injunctive relief, including worldwide freezing orders and search and seize orders. I am at home with disputes resolved by either litigation or arbitration (I have acted in arbitrations under a variety of different arbitration rules, and in ad hoc arbitrations).

I have experience across a wide range of industry sectors, including travel, and oil and gas, but my particular focus is on the financial sector.

My key recent cases have included acting for:

  • A trustee in respect of proceedings in the BVI, UK and across the US concerning substantial investments in a steel plant in Ohio;
  • Liquidators of Goldtrail Travel in successful proceedings for dishonest assistance (and enforcement of the judgments obtained), which involved proceedings in the English Court of Appeal, English Supreme Court and in the German Court;
  • A major international bank in dealing with a USD 500 million worldwide freezing injunction notified to it;
  • A tech company embroiled in shareholder litigation, in respect of which sanctions issues have required an application for the appointment of administrators so as to recover significant consideration payable in respect of the sale of the underlying business to a well-known US tech company;
  • A listed insurance broker in an investigation into one of its subsidiaries;
  • Liquidators of a wine investment company in respect of audit negligence claims against a major auditor.

I have written numerous articles and was the co-author of the second edition of Commercial Enforcement, the leading textbook on enforcement of civil judgments.

I was also named as the exclusive winner of the Asset Recovery category for England by the Client Choice Awards 2020, following a judges' panel review of more than 2,500 nominations from corporate counsel. I was previously the exclusive winner of the Litigation category for England for the Client Choice Awards 2017.

In my personal life, I like to spend time with my wife and two daughters. I also like cycling, skiing, tennis, rugby (watching these days), opera and good food and wine.
