I am an English qualified barrister.
I am an acknowledged expert in the Tech; Data; and Privacy spaces. I give insightful and practical advice based on years of experience in these areas. Though my focus is always on achieving a smart resolution where possible, I am an experienced litigator who has both brought and defended claims in the Investigatory Powers Tribunal and the High Court. I advise on both domestic and cross-border issues.
On domestic issues, I advise clients on their compliance obligations in the UK, including on UK authorities’ interactions with regimes overseas. I often lead engagement with regulators and other government officials.
On international issues, I act for a range of clients; from small, innovative start-ups, to some of the most well-known tech companies in the world. I advise on crucial decisions that determine the development and deployment of critical hardware and software including privacy-enhancing technologies that affect billions of users worldwide. I advise clients on the regulatory framework relating to the internet, including: investigatory powers; computer misuse; data privacy and information security; content moderation; and, law enforcement access to data.
Prior to joining Fieldfisher, I worked at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for more than a decade, as a legal advisor. During that period, I conducted litigation and provided specialist advice concerning national security laws, particularly the investigatory powers regime. I accrued years of experience in advising on cyber defence and security; interception; and, surveillance. I am a public law specialist, having brought many high-profile claims for judicial review; and, having provided advice to public sector clients involved with high-profile inquires and investigations, including the Litvinenko inquiry and the Dawn Sturgess Inquiry.
