Settlement for doctor paralysed by man jumping from top of Westfield shopping centre

Partner Keith Barrett and Associate Jack Sales have secured a settlement for a Junior Doctor who was left paraplegic when a man jumped from a balcony in Westfield Stratford shopping centre and landed on her in October 2018.

Grace Spence Green, 28, was walking along the lower ground floor of the shopping centre on her way to teach a children's climbing lesson when a man jumped from the third floor and landed directly on top of her. Grace suffered spinal fractures and a spinal cord injury that has left her paraplegic and a wheelchair user.

The man who jumped, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court with causing Grievous Bodily Harm.

Keith Barrett and Jack Sales represented Grace and issued proceedings in the High Court to seek compensation to assist Grace with funding medical bills and expenses attributable to her life changing injury.

Six years after the life changing incident in October 2018, Grace had not received any compensation or financial support as liability was denied in full. Less than two weeks before a Trial was due to commence at the High Court, Grace reached a settlement agreement.

Grace, who is now a Junior Doctor for the NHS, disability campaigner and podcaster, has said she feels no anger towards the jumper and is at peace with what happened. She has been fighting for compensation to help pay for the considerable daily adjustments she needs to live a full and comfortable life.

Keith Barrett and Jack Sales state "This settlement secures compensation for Grace which will go some way to easing the financial burden placed upon Grace through no fault of her own. Grace has conducted herself with the utmost integrity throughout the legal process and since sustaining her injury."
