Six-figure settlement for grieving family of young boy electrocuted in beer garden

A row of warm, hanging Edison-style light bulbs illuminated under a red wooden pergola. Green plants are in the foreground, and the background contains a blurred structure, all suggesting an outdoor setting, possibly a cozy patio or garden.
Keith Barrett and Jack Sales settled the tragic case of a seven-year-old boy who was fatally electrocuted in a pub garden in September 2018 as the result of illegal electrical wiring.

The boy was with his parents in an east London pub when, playing with a friend, he climbed a garden wall and touched one of the garden lights while also holding onto metal railings. He was pronounced dead in hospital about an hour later.

The owner of the pub later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and to stealing electricity from an unmetered supply. He was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court to nine years in prison in April 2021.

The pub owner's brother-in-law, an experienced electrician who installed the lighting, was also jailed for a year after being found guilty of failing to discharge a duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Keith and Jack were instructed by the boy's parents to pursue a civil claim for damages. Despite the pub owner being uninsured - his liability insurance was voided by the criminal conduct - Keith and Jack litigated the claim against the pub owner directly by commencing Court proceedings in the High Court of Justice.

They secured interim damages to fund psychological treatment for the parents during the claim and secured a substantial settlement, recovering both damages and legal costs to resolve the matter.
