What is spastic cerebral palsy

Spastic cerebral palsy is a developmental disorder caused by injury to the motor cortex or pyramidal tracts. This injury can occur before, during or after birth. Normal development of motor function is impaired, resulting in muscles that are stiff and tight (hypertonia), making movement difficult and reducing someone's range of motion.

Spastic cerebral palsy signs and symptoms

Each child will display symptoms of spastic cerebral palsy differently. Common symptoms include:

  • Hypertonia – still and tight muscles
  • Reduced mobility
  • Uncontrolled, exaggerated movements
  • Walking on tiptoes
  • Impaired speech and oral movements

Types of spastic cerebral palsy

There are three types of spastic cerebral palsy:

  • Quadriplegia – All arms and legs affected, as well as the torso and face
  • Diplegia – Both legs are affected, and a child's arms may display some symptoms, but to a lesser extent
  • Hemiplegia – One arm and one leg on a single side of the body may be affected, generally with the arm suffering a more pronounced effect
