Professional background

I am Solicitor Advocate of the English Courts, with over 15 years’ experience in international dispute resolution. My areas are commercial and investment arbitration, UK and cross-border litigation, litigation funding, art and cultural heritage law, and international law.

My clients range from individuals to States and State entities in high value investor-State actions in the projects, finance and commercial sectors. Having worked for international law firms in London, Paris, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, I am well versed in international law and cross-border disputes, notably those in the French and Arab-speaking regions of the world and those with a civil law element.

I am Iraqi by background and an Arabic speaker. In international arbitration, my practice is split between investment and commercial arbitration. I have represented corporations and individuals (as claimants) as well as states and state-owned entities (as respondents), in ad hoc investment treaty arbitrations under the UNCITRAL rules as well as in ICSID proceedings. In commercial arbitrations I have represented claimants and respondents under the rules of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), Abu Dhabi Commercial Conciliation and Arbitration Centre (ADCCAC) and other institutions.

I am listed in the Financial Times Best Lawyers 2023 List in the category of Art Law, and have a diploma in Italian Renaissance Art History from Oxford University, obtained in 2022. In arbitration, I have been on the Steering Committee for Young Members at the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and Editor for the Middle East section for Kluwer Arbitration Blog. I am a Member of the IBA Sub-Committee on Art and Culture and am on the European Legal Institute Task Force for Litigation Funding.
