This episode of Fieldfisher's Africa Week 2024 podcast examines the opportunities and challenges artificial intelligence (AI) presents for Africa. The episode features a conversation between Natalie Farmer, a partner in the technology and data team at Fieldfisher, and Akua Gyekye, Microsoft's Government Affairs and Legal Director for Africa.

Akua believes AI is crucial for the future of Africa, as it offers the chance to solve the continent's most urgent issues. She offers examples of how AI is already impacting Africa, such as in disaster response, agriculture, and healthcare. For example, Microsoft's AI for Good lab worked with the Kenyan Red Cross and the Kenyan space agency to use AI models to analyse satellite imagery to provide insight into where to best deploy resources in response to flooding in Kenya.

Akua notes that AI has the potential to significantly boost Africa's economy. However, to realise this potential, Akua believes that it is essential to address challenges such as bridging the digital divide and improving digital literacy. Microsoft is already working to address these challenges with initiatives like the Microsoft Airband Initiative, which aims to improve internet access for 100 million underserved communities across Africa.

Akua highlights Africa's youthful population as a significant asset for the adoption of AI as they are eager to learn and innovate. Microsoft is committed to investing in the continent's young talent pool through programs at its Africa Development Center, which is working with software engineers, developers, and universities.

The wide-ranging impact of AI is evident in the variety of sectors AI is affecting across Africa. For example, mobile money platforms, a technology particularly relevant to Africa, are using AI to determine creditworthiness, improving financial inclusion.

Akua acknowledges that regulating AI is a complex task, particularly given the 54 countries across Africa, all at different stages of AI adoption. She emphasizes the importance of collaboration and harmonization, pointing to the work of the African Union, which has launched a continental strategy for AI, and the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, which aims to harmonize digital policies across the continent.

Microsoft is committed to empowering Africa's AI revolution. The company is providing access to advanced technology and fostering innovation by investing in skills development and infrastructure.
