The new service will be built into the next generation of smart TVs and will allow the broadcasters to compete head-to-head with large streaming platforms.
UK TV viewers can currently watch live broadcasts over broadband through broadcasters’ individual apps but there is no comprehensive electronic programme guide for accessing linear broadcast services online. The service is expected to be introduced in new televisions from next year. This will mean British viewers will be able to watch live TV channels alongside on-demand content streamed to smart TVs via the internet.
